Federal Trade Commission

The role of the Federal Trade Commission is consumer protection. The FTC protects the consumer from predatory or deceptive lending practices and seeks to make sure that the consumer is able to make financial and market-based decisions with as much information as possible. This is accomplished through the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

The Bureau of Consumer Protection is a valuable resource for educational material related to credit. This information is easily accessed via the Internet and is also presented in Spanish. In addition, the Bureau of Consumer Protection web site allows consumers to file complaints online.

In a broader sense, the FTC is responsible for helping to keep balance in the national economic system, for helping to ensure the smooth functioning of the market, and for contributing to keeping the economy active and healthy. They also help to create legislation and are involved in the enforcement of existing statutes.
