Dispute Credit Report
This term refers the process of acting upon an inaccuracy or error that a consumer finds in his or her credit report. A consumer has rights and protections under the law in regard to inaccurate or incomplete information on a credit report.
Because so much of day-to-day life is affected by credit reports, these protections are very important. However, to take full advantage of these rights and protections, consumers must be familiar with current credit status, thereby detecting errors and being able to act upon any inaccuracies that are found before they are able negatively a credit application.
In the event of a credit dispute, the consumer must contact the credit reporting agency in writing, including appropriate documents with which to support the claim of error. Upon receiving the letter and supporting documentation, the credit reporting agency is bound by law to reinvestigate the matter of dispute.
